Alook at high- profile winners a and losers in the 2018 Ontario election:
WINNERS
Christine Elliott ( PC, Newmarket- Aurora) The veteran politician who lost her bid for the PC party leadership to Doug Ford easily won in a battle with Liberal incumbent Chris Ballard, who was named environmental minister last year, and Melissa Williams ( NDP). Mike Harris Jr. ( PC, Kitchener- Conestoga) The son of the former Ontario premier beat Kelly Dick ( NDP) and Joe Gowing ( Liberals) after a controversial start. Harris was appointed to be the PC candidate in Kitchener-Conestoga after sitting MPP Michael Harris ( no relation) was dismissed over an alleged inappropriate text conversation in 2012 with a former ff party intern. It was later revealed the texts between tt two consenting adults took place before the MPP Harris was married. Gurratan GG Singh ( NDP, Brampton East) The brother of federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Gurratan Singh had to overcome criticism after a 2006 photo emerged during the campaign of him holding a vulgar anti- police sign at a demonstration. Gurratan Singh beat Sudeep Verma VV ( PC) and another high- profile candidate, Parminder Singh ( Liberals. Raymond RR Cho ( PC, Scarborough North) The incumbent for Scarborough— Rouge River beat Chin Lee ( Liberal) and Dwayne Morgan ( NDP). Cho’s win comes after a “physical altercation” with a Grade 7 student outside a school last week. ww The child ripped the veteran vv politician’s campaign f flyer and Cho said he “lightly touched his head.” No charges were laid and Cho issued an apology.
LOSERS
Charles Sousa (Liberal, Mississauga-Lake shore) The finance minister lost to Conservative Rudy Cuzzetto. Sousa has represented Mississauga South since 2007, and got more than 50 per cent of the vote in the last election. Steven Del Duca ( Liberal, Vaughan- Woodbridge) Conservative Michael Tibollo defeated Del Duca, the incumbent in the previous Vaughan riding since 2011. Del Duca held two prominent cabinet positions as transportation minister and economic development minister. Kevin KK Flynn ( Liberal, Oakville) Conservative Stephen Crawford beat Flynn, the longtime Liberal and former labour minister, Denzil Minnan- Wong ( PC, Don Valley East) The longtime city councillor, one of Mayor John Tory’s four deputy mayors, fell to Liberal Michael Coteau.
