A motorcyclist in his 50s has died after after a hit-and-run collision with a vehicle in Scarborough early Thursday morning, Toronto paramedics say.

Paramedics responded to the call just before 6 a.m. Thursday for a collision at the intersection of St. Clair Ave. E. and Danforth Rd. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a blue, four-door car was seen fleeing east on Danforth Rd. with possible significant damage to its front end. Police also said that part of the front bumper is likely hanging off the car.

The intersection of St. Clair Ave. E. and Danforth Rd. is currently closed for the police investigation.

TTC tweeted that the #9 Bellamy and #16 McCowan buses are diverting both ways via Midland Ave. and Kennedy Rd. due to the collision. As well as, the #102 Markham bus is diverting both ways via Kennedy Rd., Eglinton Ave E. and Midland Ave.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is encouraged to contact police at 416-808-2222.

The man is the fourth motorcyclist to die on Toronto streets this year; the city’s 35th traffic death overall.

Traffic death numbers compiled by the Star are higher than the official police count. That’s in part because Toronto police figures for traffic fatalities don’t include deadly collisions that happen on private property, such as in the parking lots of apartment buildings or malls, or on provincial 400-series highways within Toronto, which are the jurisdiction of the Ontario Provincial Police.

For example, taking into account incidents such as these, by the Star’s count there were 41 pedestrian deaths in 2017, and 18 so far this year.

The official police tally for 2017 was 36, and the force says 17 pedestrians have died in 2018. Neither tally includes victims of homicide, such as those killed in the Yonge St. van rampage.
