A week in which an acrobatic agent is charged and a laundry rebellion unfolds

-

TURNED IN:

An off-duty FBI agent who accidentally shot someone in the leg. Chase Bishop, whose poorly thoughtout back flip in a Denver bar helped lead to the gun’s discharge, was charged with assault, Denver police said. The gun went off when he picked it up — after it had fallen out of his pants during his acrobacy.

SENT OUT:

The former president of Panama. Ricardo Martinelli was extradited there from the U.S. to face corruption and political espionage charges, the L.A. Times reports. Martinelli was said to be living in a Miami waterfront estate last year; the billionaire was pictured this week waving from a Panamanian prison.

RESTRICTED:

Smoking pot in Banff. The Alberta resort town has banned smoking or vaping the drug in public places even once it’s legal in Canada. Officials say they’re not naive about a “Rocky Mountain high” reputation or the potential costs of enforcement. But the mayor said there wasn’t much need for cannabis use in public places.

UNINHIBITED:

The women in a village near Barcelona. The BBC reports they’ve voted to go topless in public swimming pools. The binding vote, by 61 per cent to 39, overturned a local ban. The issue flared up after police turned up at a pool last summer and ordered two women to put on their tops.

WINNER:

London Breed, the San Francisco supervisor now about to become mayor. She’s the first African-American woman elected mayor in the city — defeating a man who would have been the city’s first openly gay man in the job. Breed saw her win as a message to kids who grew up poor.

LOSER:

Of press credentials, if Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign manager has his way with Jim Acosta. The CNN reporter was targeted by Brad Parscale for shouting a question during the Trump-Kim Jong Un signing ceremony, Fox News reports. Among the questions: “Mr. President, did he agree to denuclearize?”

NAMED:

Macedonia. Or, as it’s formally known, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Under a preliminary deal with neighbouring Greece, it would become the Republic of North Macedonia. The dispute has been going on for decades and helped keep it out of the EU and NATO.

SHAMED:

A single mother in the English town of Colyton. Claire Mountjoy got an email instructing her not to hang her laundry to dry as it could hurt the tone of the neighbourhood. In response, and after a Facebook post, town residents have been displaying their underwear and nighties outside their homes in solidarity.
