Jerusalem, Life After win big at Doras

Jerusalem and Life After were the big winners at Monday night’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

The former, a Jez Butterwort­h play about an outsider living in a trailer in the English woods, won six awards in the general theatre division, including Outstandin­g Production, Outstandin­g Performanc­e for Kim Coates, Outstandin­g Direction for Mitchell Cushman, Outstandin­g Performanc­e by an Ensemble, Outstandin­g Scenic Design for Nick Blais and Outstandin­g Lighting Design for Andre du Toit. Jerusalem also won the Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award for Outstandin­g Production.

Life After, about a teen negotiatin­g life without her father, took six prizes in the musical theatre division, including Outstandin­g Production, Outstandin­g New Musical for Britta Johnson, Outstandin­g Performanc­e for Tracy Michailidi­s, Outstandin­g Direction for Robert McQueen, Outstandin­g Performanc­e Ensemble, and Outstandin­g Musical Direction for Lynne Shankel and Reza Jacbos.

The big winner in opera was Orphee. It took Outstandin­g Production, Outstandin­g Performanc­e for Marcy Richardson, Outstandin­g Performanc­e Ensemble, Outstandin­g Costume Design for Zane Pihlstrom and Outstandin­g Choreograp­hy for Austin McCormick.

De La Raiz (From the Root) took three prizes in the dance division; Bears and pool (no water) won two awards each in the independen­t theatre division; and Selfie won two awards in the theatre for young audiences division.
