Jerusalem, Life After win big at Doras
Jerusalem and Life After were the big winners at Monday night’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The former, a Jez Butterworth play about an outsider living in a trailer in the English woods, won six awards in the general theatre division, including Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance for Kim Coates, Outstanding Direction for Mitchell Cushman, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, Outstanding Scenic Design for Nick Blais and Outstanding Lighting Design for Andre du Toit. Jerusalem also won the Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production.
Life After, about a teen negotiating life without her father, took six prizes in the musical theatre division, including Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Musical for Britta Johnson, Outstanding Performance for Tracy Michailidis, Outstanding Direction for Robert McQueen, Outstanding Performance Ensemble, and Outstanding Musical Direction for Lynne Shankel and Reza Jacbos.
The big winner in opera was Orphee. It took Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance for Marcy Richardson, Outstanding Performance Ensemble, Outstanding Costume Design for Zane Pihlstrom and Outstanding Choreography for Austin McCormick.
De La Raiz (From the Root) took three prizes in the dance division; Bears and pool (no water) won two awards each in the independent theatre division; and Selfie won two awards in the theatre for young audiences division.
