Celebrate all year by buying Canadian

-

So another Canada Day arrives to wave the flag, enjoy a barbecue, watch fireworks and celebrate Canada. Is it enough to pat ourselves on the back as we enjoy this great country?

Canadians face prolonged poor economic growth and increased financial inequity with a median wage (half of Canada makes this or less) of about $18/hour. These are not the building blocks for a better Canadian future. We have watched America stumble down this path for years and it is now dealing with very different leadership.

Is this Canada’s fate? We need to protect our treasure to ensure our children and their children enjoy this great country. Canada was not created from imported beaver pelts or foreign wood products. Canadians created wealth from our natural environment and built Canada. We did a good job of creating wealth in Canada to share among the citizens and built one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Since 2007, the Canadian economy has bled billions in trade deficits, which means we spend more in the world than it buys from us. This money leaves Canada and doesn’t return. That exodus of cash leaves Canadians poorer. What can Canadians do to protect the wonderful country we have built?

First we can’t expect the world to buy Canadian products that we don’t buy. Canada Goose or Bombardier would not be successful today if Canadians had not supported their products. Buying, building and selling Canadian creates world-class businesses and keeps wealth in Canada for our friends, family, seniors, the military and all Canadians.

It is how we started the job of protecting Canada’s future and it will not be easy or fast, but we have done it before. Ron Svajlenko, RebuildCanada.com, Bowmanville

Re Protected bird to be removed from fest grounds, June 27

I am proud to belong to a nation such as ours that extends itself to the protection of a mother killdeer tending her nest in the path of the upcoming Ottawa Bluesfest.

It’s a timely tribute to who we are, too, as we celebrate Canada Day. This seemingly un-newsworthy story speaks volumes about the values of a civilized and enlightened society that respects the least of its members. Louis Gagliardi, Woodbridge
