Support and condemnation for MPP Tibollo
Re Political sparks fly over ‘bulletproof vest’ remark, July 19
I am extremely disappointed to see the way NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has been conducting herself since the Progressive Conservatives came into power. No matter the issue, Horwath will oppose it, and seemingly attempt to blow things out of proportion!
Yes, as the leader of the Opposition she should hold issues to task. However, after the disappointing Liberal reign, you would expect “cooler heads” to prevail at this early stage of governance. Her latest rant — calling MPP Michael Tibollo “blatantly racist” for wearing a bulletproof vest while on a ride-along with Toronto’s police — is totally out of line, and just adds fuel to an already raging fire. It was an irresponsible remark, and I think an apology is in order from Ms. Horwath.
With the way she has been conducting herself using this “bully” approach to things, I would also suggest the NDP begin looking for a new leader, someone who will work with the current government to help get “the engine of Canada” back into gear. Richard Chadwick, Halton Hills, Ont. Wearing a bulletproof vest during a ride-along should not carry any shock factor for any neighbourhood. Doctors wear masks in all hospitals, labourers wear gloves on all work sites and those on patrol wear vests — even if in a church in Rosedale.
A vest is part of an officer’s uniform, and is necessary for ride-along participants no matter who they are. And yet Tibollo, while trying to understand policing first hand, gets labelled a racist! Protection is necessary in today’s world — but what will protect the citizens from these hot buttons being pressed for political brownie points? Ernie Ilson, Mississauga Once again the Doug Ford Conservatives, purporting to be sensitive listeners to the community, just don’t “get it.”
Minister Tibollo failed miserably in understanding a vital Toronto community that is framed by love, caring and a sense of compassion; instead, Tibollo stirred up stereotypes of violence, anger and fear. In the process, he criminalized an entire community.
In not appreciating the Jane-Finch neighbourhood for what it is — a collection of vibrant, diverse citizens trying to live their multidimensional lives fully — Tibollo served to reduce the community to a group of “others.”
Shame on you, minister. Next time, get rid of the bulletproof vest and do a walkabout. Meet people, and most of all, listen! John Cooper, Whitby
