Fountain at Woodbine Beach is no oasis
scending on the beaches, you can bet a lot of them will be darn glad to make a pit stop at a drinking fountain — like a desert oasis.
But the fountain next to the boardwalk at the Woodbine bathing station, at Woodbine Beach Park, is more of a mirage than an oasis. It constantly leaks water, but nary a drop from the spigot.
David Cooper, one of the best photographers in the business when he retired from the Star two years ago, often wanders the beaches, shooting incredible wildlife pictures that he posts on Facebook, delighting his friends.
He sent us a photo of a drinking fountain that’s also equipped with a bottle-refilling tap, wrapped in caution tape, with water droplets cascading from the bottom of the bowl.
“This new-style water fountain in front of the Woodbine bathing station has been leaking for over a year,” he said. “It recently got much worse. The city’s answer so far? Caution tape.” Status James Dann, who’s in charge of waterfront parks, emailed to say that “the water bottle filling station will be completely replaced with a new unit by next Friday at the latest.
