Hot titles coming in September
Librarians choose the top 10 new titles they want on shelves
With the Loan Stars program, librarians across Canada vote on the book titles coming out each month that they believe should be available in the country’s library systems. Here are the top 10 for September: 1. Transcription, Kate Atkinson, Doubleday Canada 2. Woman World, Aminder Dhaliwal, Drawn & Quarterly 3. The Confession, Jo Spain, Crooked Lane Books 4. Something For Everyone, Lisa Moore, House of Anansi 5. Leverage in Death, J.D. Robb, St. Martin’s Press 6. The Men In White, Anosh Irani, House of Anansi 7. Split Tooth, Tanya Tagaq, Penguin Canada 8. Sisters of the Winter Wood, Rena Rossner, Orbit 9. All Things Consoled, Elizabeth Hay, McClelland & Stewart 10. Left, Theanna Bischoff, NeWest Press
This month, six of the10 books are from Canadian authors: 1, 3, 6 and 7, and 9 and 10, and they represent a diverse range of titles from independent presses and large publishers and across country and genre. Here’s what the librarians had to say:
About Transcription: “As delicious as you were hoping if you are a Kate Atkinson fan. Juliet’s story of being a spy in WWII, in a somewhat unique role on home soil, is harrowing, bizarre, and deeply humanizing.”
Alexandra Yarrow, Ottawa Public Library
About Woman World: “Funny and easy to connect with as a woman. The graphics are detailed yet simple. Beautiful to read and imagine myself in the pages.”
Allana Hiscock, Greater Victoria Public Library
About The Confession: “Quite enjoyed this title. You know exactly who’s committed the crime at the beginning (I warn you that it’s difficult to read), and the rest of the book is spent trying to understand why it happened. It isn’t a shocking whodunnit, but I still found it compelling all the same.”
Jennifer Green, Oshawa Public Library
