A week in which a wedding planner accidental­ly gets hitched, and a memoir upsets the Apple cart

WED A Hong Kong woman, despite her saying she was tricked into marrying a stranger in mainland China. She said she was told it was a simulation as she trained to be a wedding planner, but the contract was real. She learned it was a scam when she came back to Hong Kong, and likely must seek a divorce.

BORDER CROSSING A criminal gang from Chile. British police say the group flew in burglars to break into houses and steal luxury items. It targeted wealthy homes in southeaste­rn England. The gang has been dismantled and dozens of arrests have been made in Britain and other countries. FIGHTING BACK Lauryn Hill, against allegation­s she stole music for her 1998 album The

Miseducati­on of Lauryn Hill. Jazz pianist and producer Robert Glasper also claimed she treated musicians badly. Hill denied wrongdoing in an essay on Medium.

COLD The trail of a Michigan time capsule. High school classmates reunited to uncover the capsule buried 30 years ago. But after two hours of digging outside Coloma Junior High there was no sign of the Michael Jackson cassette and other treasures. They may come back, with a metal detector.

SHED A shirt by a French tennis player, at least for the umpire. Alize Cornet was given a code violation for taking her shirt off on court at the U.S. Open. She had a sports bra underneath, and the warning from the ump sparked an outcry. Organizers eventually said the decision was wrong.

IN NO MAN’S LAND A growing number of Hispanics along the Texas-Mexico border with birth records showing they were U.S.-born. The Washington Post reports they’re being denied U.S. passports and facing deportatio­n. The government alleges local midwives and doctors issued U.S. birth certificat­es to Mexican babies.

FIGHTING BACK (2) Steve Jobs’s widow and sister, against a new memoir. The book by his daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs, Small Fry, portrays him as a cold and sometimes inappropri­ate parent, CNN reports. His wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, and sister Mona Simpson say that’s “not the husband and father we knew.”

HOT A dolphin off the French coast. The sexual arousal of the creature near Landévenne­c in Brittany has caused the mayor to ban bathing on the beach, then forbid swimmers from getting within 40 metres. The animal has become aggressive and officials fear for swimmers’ safety.
