John McCain, remembered as maverick, hero

Just as the “Lion of the Senate,” Ted Kennedy, battled one of the most formidable brain cancers known to neurologists, so it was likewise with the “maverick” John McCain.
In his typically tireless spirit, McCain underwent a taxing treatment while simultaneously ensuring he supported major government bills that he deemed crucial.
He stood against right-wing evangelical extremism, and wasn’t tainted by the unyielding partisanship of late.
The pinnacle of John McCain’s career was undoubtedly that defining vote safeguarding Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell looked on, likely anticipating a great victory for Trump, as McCain gave the decisive thumbs-down! David C. Searle, Toronto John McCain was a true hero. He tried to bridge the gap between left and right, while Donald Trump tries to drive a wedge between the two. Joe Battista, Mississauga I read in the news that Republican Senate candidate Kelli Ward said the announcement about John McCain ending his cancer treatment was timed to hurt her campaign.
If it were really so, then I can only say that the great hero surpassed his sacrifices for his country in the Vietnam War by making an even greater sacrifice in a much bigger war — the war to protect democracy and decency.
