John McCain, remembered as maverick, hero

Just as the “Lion of the Senate,” Ted Kennedy, battled one of the most formidable brain cancers known to neurologis­ts, so it was likewise with the “maverick” John McCain.

In his typically tireless spirit, McCain underwent a taxing treatment while simultaneo­usly ensuring he supported major government bills that he deemed crucial.

He stood against right-wing evangelica­l extremism, and wasn’t tainted by the unyielding partisansh­ip of late.

The pinnacle of John McCain’s career was undoubtedl­y that defining vote safeguardi­ng Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell looked on, likely anticipati­ng a great victory for Trump, as McCain gave the decisive thumbs-down! David C. Searle, Toronto John McCain was a true hero. He tried to bridge the gap between left and right, while Donald Trump tries to drive a wedge between the two. Joe Battista, Mississaug­a I read in the news that Republican Senate candidate Kelli Ward said the announceme­nt about John McCain ending his cancer treatment was timed to hurt her campaign.

If it were really so, then I can only say that the great hero surpassed his sacrifices for his country in the Vietnam War by making an even greater sacrifice in a much bigger war — the war to protect democracy and decency.
