Six people were shot, three of them fatally, by a 26-year-old woman who opened fire with a handgun Thursday at a Rite Aid distribution center in Maryland, authorities said. They said she then shot herself in the head and died at a hospital.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said the shooter was a temporary employee who reported for work “as usual” on Thursday before brandishing a 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun.

Gahler said two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and another died in a hospital. Three other victims remain hospitalized with wounds that are not believed to be lifethreatening, Gahler said.

The woman, Snochia Moseley, had “two, perhaps three” extra clips of ammunition.

She was taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gahler said the handgun was legally registered to Moseley, who lived in Baltimore County.

Gahler said the victims were shot “outside the building and inside the facility,” and he did not know whether all of them were Rite Aid employees.

Harford County Executive Barry Glassman called the shooting situation a “too often occurrence,” referring to gun violence across the country.

Gahler said law enforcement did not fire any shots.

Mike Carre, an office clerk at Zenith Global Logistics in Aberdeen, said he was working Thursday morning when a commotion began in a parking lot adjacent to his office. Carre said his office is connected to the Rite Aid distribution center.

“There’s a shooting at Rite Aid!” said a man who hobbled into Carre’s office. Carre said he saw a SWAT team with rifles and officers charging around the area. The police eventually began bringing employees over from Rite Aid to the Zenith office, which served as a holding point.

Agents from the FBI and the Baltimore office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the shootings. About noon, dozens of SWAT team members could be seen coming from the building, and a Maryland State Police helicopter was at the scene.

Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital in Baltimore said it was treating several of the victims. Hospital trauma director Dr. Raymond Fang said four people with gunshot wounds were brought to the facility.

A family reunification center has been set up at a local fire house.

The attack in Aberdeen, 50 kilometres northeast of Baltimore, followed two workplace shootings on Wednesday. A man opened fire at the software company where he worked in Middleton, Wisconsin, injuring several people before he was killed by police. Later that day, another man walked into a municipal building south of Pittsburgh and shot four people before killing himself.
