Media struggles with Kavanaugh issue

-

Re Emotions run high in historic showdown, Sept. 28 Notwithstanding the eloquence and courage of Prof. Christine Blasey Ford, the GOP may soon appoint to the Supreme Court a man who may have been a sexual predator.

Justice Clarence Thomas was appointed under a similar cloud, and has been practically electively mute ever since, continually opposing social equality measures and unabashedly supporting the American gun makers, despite the excessive number of Black people whose lives are lost each year to gunfire.

The #MeToo movement is but the tip of an iceberg of a gender war around absolute male power. Women who are actually murdered each and every year due to the wanton marketing practices of the gun makers can never come forward to eloquently state their case before either of the houses of Congress.

I personally doubt that even if Brett Kavanaugh did assault Dr. Blasey Ford he remembers having done so. But his self-characterization as just a guy who liked beer, the way every other guy liked beer, is a denial, under oath, that amounts to a lie. Dr. Ron Charach, Toronto

The Toronto Star never ceases to amaze me. Of all the photos of Judge Brett Kavanaugh available to the media, the Star chooses the one depicting Kavanaugh as the “villain,” unlike, for example, the photo chosen for the front page of the Wall Street Journal — same day, same story.

Obviously, Judge Kavanaugh’s politics are not in compliance with the views held by the Star. But is this the role that the media should be playing or should our media report the facts in an unbiased manner and let the people decide?

It’s little wonder so many view our media with some disdain. Donald Cangiano, Oakville

Who to believe — Brett Kavanaugh or Christine Blasey Ford?

Both sound honest, but psychologists know it’s possible to implant (or develop) false memories and that we can honestly deny things that we would rather forget.

In this case, both parties are under considerable pressure, and the conflict could be the result of a bit of both. Taking the president’s view, it could be all false news. Andy Turnbull, Toronto
