Ford’s scrimping while world is burning

-

Re Canada’s emissions top G20, report says, Nov. 15 If our politicians can read, especially Premier Doug Ford, this should be most alarming, given the extreme power of a perturbed climate and our vulnerability to these extremes.

It’s not a good thing that we emit about three times more than the average G20 person. And it’s unclear if this includes long-haul flying, which is often both uncounted and underestimated, as the height of emissions once aloft nearly doubles the warming impacts.

And now in Ontario, we remove the watchdog, to allegedly save a tiny bit of money, ignoring just how extremely costly a changed climate is becoming. Although we are all somewhat on the climate criminal side, it’s the Ford Conservatives who are condemning much of the world to a highly changed circumstance that, once broken, is not repairable. Hamish Wilson, Toronto This story establishes that we’re not who or what we thought we were. It has all been a lie. Despite all our international posturing, Canadians are in fact the worst polluters in the G20.

And no member in the respected crowd has any idea how to achieve the goals of the Paris climate-change agreement, even though the G20 members create 80 per cent of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

While Canada is 38th in terms of population, we’re the seventh-largest generator of emissions. Because of the tarsands and transportation of its filthy crude, each Canadian produces 22 tonnes of greenhouse gas per year, while the G20 average is eight tonnes per person.

Our pompous, self-righteous, tree-hugging, Big Oil-loving prime minister apparently never thought to mention our status in the world while buying us a $40-billion pipeline. Cavan Gostlin, Oshawa
