Final Metropass about to ride off into history

- CLAIRE FLOODY STAFF REPORTER

After nearly 40 years of helping Torontonians get from point A to B, the TTC Metropass has reached its final stop.

The last Metropass ever went on sale Friday until Dec. 5, the TTC said in a news release.

The pass will provide unlimited travel for the month of December.

This move comes as a part of the TTC’s transition to the Presto card fare system.

Tickets and tokens will also be discontinued by the end of 2019.

The first Metropass was made out of paper and went on sale on April 7, 1980, for $26, the release said.

It was an instant success.

There were 693,000 adult monthly passes sold from May to December of that year. In 2017, 2.4 million adult pass- es were sold. Since 1980, more than 78 million Metropasses have been sold, the TTC said.

The December Metropass will feature the Cabbagetown Neighbours Heritage Mural on Parliament St. by Poonam Sharma and Michael Cavanaugh.

December Metropasses are available for purchase at collector booths and participating TTC fare agents.

It costs $146.25 for adults and $116.75 for seniors (65+), students (13-19) and post-secondary students with valid ID.

The TTC is encouraging customers to switch over to Presto before January.
