2014 Seven Falls Cellars Merlot, Wahluke Slope, Columbia Valley, Washington (Vintages 420711 $21.95 in stores and online)

With rich folds of cashmere fruit, this Washington wonder drinks like a Cabernet Sauvignon texturally while the flavour is pure Merlot. Sweet cherries dipped in dark chocolate, warm vanilla bean, toasted almond — it’s all there with precision and purity. Then, the mouthcoating middle fades to a long café latte finish. Few places in the world produce Merlot with this level of richness and hedonistic appeal, but the warm, dry Wahluke Slope in south-central Washington is one of them — and 2014 was a very good year. Sure to sell out. Score: 96

2015 Burrowing Owl Athene, Okanagan Valley, BC (Vintages 371336 $44.95 in stores and online)

One taste of this red blend and you’ll know why Burrowing Owl wines have a cult-like following across Canada. Athene is a thundering blend of 52 per cent Syrah and 48 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon that slides in and instantly expands with a kaleidoscope of flavour — blueberry pie, cassis, and damson puree laced with warm sage and dried fig — all polished on top and plush underneath. It’s a wine that’s on the pricier side — but for good reason, you could easily spend much more for far less. Delicious. Score: 92

2013 Balbas Crianza, Ribera del Duero DO, Spain (Vintages 437673 $21.95 in stores and online)

This five-year-old, sultry Spanish red instantly draws you in with its expressive aromas of warm, freshly turned black earth and riveting entry. The attack is grippy and drying, evocative and instantly seductive, calling to mind blackberry fruit yes, but it is also deeply inlaid with black olive, iron, stone with a whisper of menthol. Instead of a glossy, polished appeal, this wine is teasingly textured, quietly magnetic, and draws you back sip after sip. Score: 93+

2016 Tedeschi Capitel Nicalo Valpolicella Superiore DOC Veneto, Italy (Vintages 984997 $17.95 in stores and online)

This charming Italian appeals to seasoned connoisseurs and newbies alike with its pulsequickening appeal. Elegant scents of crushed berries lead a red berry entry that tastes fullfruited but not overblown, then quickly shifts to reveal touches of blackcurrant, dried earth and warm wood — all held in place by a slight talc-like texture on the finish. The balance and harmony of this wine lends a sense of poise that makes it both accessible yet sophisticated. A steal. Score: 92+

2014 Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre IGT, Veneto, Italy (Vintages 672931 $24.95 in stores and online)

As the most frequently awarded red under $25 by Wine Spectator magazine, this wine has earned its following. Uncork a bottle and prepare to be seduced with aromas and flavours of black forest fruit dappled with dried plum, cassis, black peppercorn, cocoa powder, cinnamon, coffee and more. And the finish lingers for ages. The wine is made from a blend of indigenous grapes, some of which have been partially dried to add richness to the wine. Pure goodness. Score: 91+
