Put constituents ahead of party politics

-

Re Ford urges Simard to keep ranks, Nov. 29 I applaud MPP Amanda Simard for voting against her party line on the cuts to French language services. It doesn’t matter whether or not I agree with this French language issue but she did exactly what she was elected to do. She was elected to represent her riding at Queen’s Park and that is exactly what she did.

I get tired of hearing that MPPs and MPs vote the party line, completely disregarding those who hired them to represent their views. If they can’t do that then they need to find another line of work. Patrick Drumm, Courtice Kudos to Amanda Simard for genuinely working for the people of Ontario and having a mind of her own and keeping her integrity.

It is a shame that a party leader cannot see the advantages of his members expressing their thoughts and ideas, even if they differ from the leader’s. It means they aren’t puppets. Bev Northeast, Goodwood Hurray for Amanda Simard for having the guts to stand up for her constituents and openly oppose Premier Doug Ford.

However, as much as I support the rights of Ontario Francophones to protective oversight and French education, unlike climate change, this is not a life-threatening issue.

The Ford government has dismantled all policies that address climate change and failed to replace these with anything effective. Where are the morally minded MPPs who should be standing up for the future of their constituents? I am appalled at the lack of concern shown by all Conservative MPPs regarding Ford’s shortsighted and vindictive cancellation of all climate change programs.

It appears that the Conservatives’ lust for power (both federal and provincial) far outweighs their obligations to the well-being of their constituents or the planet.

Instead they continue to sheepishly follow ill informed and spiteful leaders down a path of earthly destruction. Sue Braiden, Erin, Ont.
