All of Ontario should remember Walkerton

-

Re Bill ignores lessons of Walkerton, critics say, Dec. 10

The good people of Huron-Bruce (the riding in which Walkerton sits) must be happy with their environment and with the non-platform of the PC party in the 2018 provincial election. Either that or they have very short memories. About 52 per cent voted to return Lisa Thompson to the legislature. I guess the majority will soon rejoice at the repeal of the Clean Water Act when there is no longer “red-tape” to protect them. Peter Broughton, Toronto Everyone in Ontario who drinks water should contact their MPP and the premier protesting in the strongest possible terms the proposed law which undermines rules established years ago to protect our water supply.

Supporting the ill-conceived Bill 66 simply defies logic and our provincial legislators would do well to remember that in Walkerton almost 20 years ago, seven people died, hundreds fell ill and many suffered long standing illness as a result of improper treatment of their municipal drinking water. Bill Wensley, Cobourg, Ont.

I know of no government that sets out to develop regulations to make life difficult for its citizens.

Rather, these rules of conduct are passed to protect our people, our communities and our land, air and water.

Doug Ford taking a weed whacker to them will have unintended consequences. Think of it as “jobs to die for.” Peter Pinch, Toronto
