A 20-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash between a car and a train.

The young man, accused of being behind the wheel of the car, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash shortly before 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the rail crossing on Cochrane Rd., south of Lawrence Rd., near the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

When police arrived on scene they found a CP freight train and a black 2014 GMC Terrain, which was flipped on its side south of the railway tracks, said Const. Jerome Stewart.

There was no one in the vehicle and police allege the driver fled.

The charges relate to weapons offences, failing to comply with court orders and a break-and-enter.

Soon after, police found the 20-year-old at his home nearby and he was arrested.

When police searched his name, they found he has eight outstanding charges before the courts in Hamilton and four at an out-of-town court, Stewart said.

Those charges relate to weapons offences, failing to comply with court orders and a breakand-enter.

The accused was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries, where he remains under police custody.

Police are opposed to his bail. He was expected to appear in court by video Thursday.

Witnesses have told police the railway crossing lights were flashing at the time of the crash. The GMC has also been seized for examination.

The 20-year-old is charged with failing to stop after a collision and three counts of failing to comply with bail.
