Violence in Beaches

- STAFF REPORTER

Quiet neighbourhood on edge after daytime shooting,

RHIANNA JACKSON-KELSO A daytime shooting in the Beaches, a neighbourhood favoured for its close-knit and family-friendly community, has left some residents feeling unsafe.

Police responded to a report of gunshots near Queen St. East and Woodbine Ave. around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. They located two male victims in their 20s suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to hospital and are expected to recover.

Police found shell casings and three firearms at the scene, as well as a vehicle with bullet holes. Insp. Anthony Paoletta said he believes the victims were shot inside the vehicle and later made their way to a nearby business.

Two male suspects seen leaving the area on foot were arrested, said Const. Katrina Arrogante. Police found a second vehicle they say was abandoned by the suspects.

Paoletta said the shooting may have started north on Woodbine near Kingston Rd. before progressing south to Queen St. The northbound lane of Woodbine Ave. and the eastbound lane of Queen St. were closed several hours while police investigated.

Chris Gradi n, a resident whose condo overlooks the crime scene, said he was “flabbergasted” to find his street crowded with police.

“To have it at our front door like this is jarring,” he said.

“We (feel) unsafe in our own neighbourhood, and that’s disturbing.”
