Fluctuating temperatures over the next few days will make travel treacherous.
The freezing rain that turned city streets into a giant Slip ‘N Slide is expected to continue Thursday morning.
And the volatility we’ve seen lately will also continue with temperatures warming up Thursday night only to plummet back down again Friday.
“It’s been quite the rollercoaster,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Desjanelle Matthews. But she said it’s nothing out of the ordinary.
“It does happen year in and year out. We do have these waves of colder air and then warmer air. It’s not unusual for us to experience this kind of weather in the wintertime in southern Ontario.”
Environment Canada issued a freezing drizzle advisory, warning of dangerous travel conditions “due to the prolonged period of icing.”
The agency issues freezing drizzle advisories when sub-zero drizzle is expected and may freeze on contact, creating icy surfaces. The advisory is in effect for almost all of southern Ontario.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” Environment Canada said.
A short period of freezing rain or “heavy freezing drizzle” is predicted for Thursday afternoon, Matthews said.
The daytime high will be 0 C, feeling like -7 C in the morning with wind chill.
But then temperatures are expected to dramatically warm up to 7 C by evening, plunging back down to -10 C with wind chill overnight.
Thursday night’s warm temperatures will turn the freezing drizzle to rain, Matthews said — adding that there is also a chance of a thunderstorm.
