Clay woodland animal plaques

-

Sculpt favourite woodland critters using clay you can bake in the oven and then mount them on wooden plaques found at craft stores.

Supplies:

Oven baked clay Wooden plaques Acrylic paint and paintbrush Oven Aluminum foil plate (for baking) Glue gun and glue sticks Paper and glue stick (optional)

Step 1

Cut off a piece of clay and roll into a ball. Mold the ball into the shape of an animal head, using your fingers to sculpt the clay, creating ears and a nose. Try to make the back side of the head as flat as possible so it can be glued to the wooden plaque.

Step 2

Ask an adult to help you use the oven. Bake the clay on an aluminum foil covered tray or pie plate, according to the product instructions. There are different brands of oven baked clay and each brand has its own set of baking times and oven temperatures. In general, you will want to bake the clay for approximately 15 minutes per 1⁄4 inch of clay thickness. Keep an eye on your creations while they bake. The clay should not brown. When you take it out of the oven, it will harden further. Let the clay cool completely. It will be too hot to touch.

Step 3

Have fun painting faces on your clay critters. Let the paint dry completely.

Step 4

You can leave your plaques unpainted, paint them or cover the plaques with paper.

To cover with paper, trace the plaque on a piece of paper and cut out using scissors. Apply glue on to the paper and press onto the plaque, smoothing it out with your fingers to remove any air bubbles. Let dry completely.

Step 5

Attach the clay animal to the wooden plaque using a glue gun.
