The morality of environment protection

-

Re Don’t hate the vegan, hate the moral dilemma, Opinion, Feb. 25 The word “opinion” should have been in large red letters. There is no moral dilemma for me in eating meat nor is there, to the best of my knowledge, for the people whom I know.

Regarding the “three Ns,” while the eating of meat may not be necessary, it seems to be both natural and normal as humans have been doing it for thousands of years.

Respecting “do-gooder derogation,” I expect when it is observed, is not a reaction to another’s morality, but rather a reaction to the other person seeking to impose that morality and seeking to shame or humiliate.

I may or may not change, but in the meantime I will simply eat what I choose and allow others to do the same without me seeking to change their preferences. R.E. Vanauken, Whitby Re B.C.’s request to stop Alberta oil export law rejected, Feb. 24 Whales were almost completely wiped out by humans over excessive hunting to provide whale oil to consumers. The discovery of petroleum saved them; but today our excessive demand for oil could again destroy whale habitat and ours.

Oceans are getting warmer and more acidic. The planet is more and more polluted, causing major health problems for its population.

The climate is changing rapidly, affecting all species. Choosing between people and whales is not an option.

The real option is to reduce substantially our excessive use of fossil fuels before it’s too late. Rene Ebacher, Toronto
