A man who repeatedly raped his wife over the course of their short marriage will serve four years in prison, less six months time served, Superior Court Justice James Diamond ruled Friday.

Rajinder Gupta’s mother, Sheela Gupta, convicted of uttering death threats and assault, was given a suspended sentence of two years. His father, Vinod Gupta, convicted of uttering death threats, was given a conditional sentence of two years.

Rajinder Gupta’s actions were “repulsive and reprehensible,” Diamond said, describing a pattern of physical and sexual violence that began on the wedding night of the three-month arranged marriage in 2015 and escalated until his wife went to police. The Guptas “abused their positions of trust” over the woman who moved into their home, setting strict rules about what she could eat and controlling her access to money.

The victim cannot be identified due to a publication ban that can be ordered in sex assault cases at the victim’s request.

None of the Guptas expressed remorse prior to the sentencing decision and declined to address the court.

Sheela Gupta dabbed away tears as her son was handcuffed and placed into the prisoner’s box during a brief court break.

The victim, who was not present in court Friday but attended the sentencing hearing earlier this year with her parents, told court her life has been “ruined” and she remains afraid of entering any new relationships.

Diamond found Rajinder Gupta guilty of four counts of sexual assault and one count of assault last year. Gupta vaginally and anally raped his wife, telling her to “let the pain happen,” Diamond ruled.

Sheela Gupta harshly slapped the victim and told her she “should be killed” for not making her son happy, Diamond found.
