Lightfoot film to debut at Hot Docs

Films about singers Gordon Lightfoo t and Michael Hutchence, jazz legend Miles Davis, NHL trailblaze­r Willie O’Ree and famed Swedish author Stieg Larsson are all part of the lineup for this year’s Hot Docs festival in Toronto, organizers have revealed.

Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentar­y festival, officially announced its Special Presentati­ons program on Tuesday and it includes three musician profiles: Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind and Mystify: Michael Hutchence, about the former lead singer of Australian rock band INXS, who died in 1997 in what was ruled a suicide.

Also in the lineup for the fest, which runs April 25 to May 5: Willie, about O’Ree, the NHL’s first Black hockey player; Cold Case Hammarskjo­ld, which explores the 1961 plane crash that took the life of the United Nations secretary general; Quiet Storm: The Ron Artest Story, about the former NBA player turned mental-health advocate now known as Metta World Peace; Framing John DeLorean, about the entreprene­ur and would-be ’80s automaker; XY Chelsea, about recently rejailed U.S. military-secret leaker Chelsea Manning; Stieg Larsson: The Man Who Played With Fire, about the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series; Ask Dr. Ruth, about the famous sex therapist Ruth Westheimer.

The full selection of films to screen at Hot Docs 2019, including the opening night film, will be announced on March 19. Ticket packages and passes are now on sale online.
