Hamilton LTC home transfers 52 residents

Moved to two hospitals after 49 residents, 13 staff test positive for COVID

Fifty-two residents from The Rosslyn Retirement Home were transferre­d to Hamilton hospitals after an outbreak of COVID-19 at the facility.

Residents at The Rosslyn were transferre­d to hospitals in the city starting at 4:45 p.m. Friday, with the last patient arriving at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Of the 52 residents, 27 were sent to St. Joe’s and 25 to Hamilton Health Sciences.

At the time of the transfer, 49 residents, as well as 13 staff members, had tested positive for COVID-19. Additional test results are pending.

Health officials say the families of the patients who were transferre­d have been notified. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city jumped to 578 Saturday — up from 521 Friday. There are an additional six probable cases. One new COVID-19 death was reported, bringing the total number of deaths in the city to 27. It is unclear whether or not the latest death is a Rosslyn resident.

There are currently 10 ongoing outbreaks in Hamilton at retirement residences and long-term-care facilities.

The latest outbreak was declared May 15 at Macassa Lodge, one of two long-termcare facilities run by the City of Hamilton. One staff member has tested positive for COVID-19.

There are additional ongoing outbreaks at Grace Villa, Village of Wentworth Heights, Extendicar­e Hamilton, Arbour Creek Care Centre, Blackadar Continuing Care Centre, The Rosslyn, Idlewyld Manor, Wentworth Lodge, and Dundurn Place Care Centre.

However, there are no active cases at Wentworth Lodge, as the cases that put the facility into outbreak status were discovered to be false positives.

Outbreaks at Regina Gardens and Heritage Green Nursing Home were declared over on May 15.

In Halton Region, seven new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported, bringing the total to 557. There are an additional 69 probable cases. No new deaths have been reported in Halton.

No new positive cases have been reported in HaldimandN­orfolk, which remains at 204 confirmed cases.
