Man killed in Oakville shooting described as ‘a gentle giant’
Police don’t disclose motive of what they believe was a targeted attack at internet firm’s offices
Kareem Wade spent a lot of his time protecting people, from when he worked as a security guard in high school right through the days leading up to his death.
“Kareem was a gentle giant — a great big teddy bear who was loved by so many,” said Bunmi Omiyale, a close family friend. “His impact on the people who interacted with him remains immeasurable.
“Kareem was a humble, loving and kind soul, who always made sure everyone else was OK. He loved to have conversations to gain wisdom, and always made sure to take away the good in all situations. Kareem worked throughout the city, touching the lives of people of all ages, groups and cultures.”
Wade, 34, and Afheed (Al) Rehmtulla, 43, were fatally shot outside PurePages, a custom internet and Wi-Fi company on Iroquois Shore Road near Eighth Line, at about 3:10 a.m. last Saturday.
Two other people were shot, but they are expected to make a full recovery. Police are not identifying those two victims.
Rehmtulla listed himself as the director of technology at PurePages on his
LinkedIn profile. Friends said Wade worked there as well.
Halton Regional Police have yet to make any arrests and the hunt for suspects continues.
Police believe it was a targeted shooting, although the motive is not known.
Omiyale said a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Wade’s family, including his parents and eight siblings. The crowdfunding page was set up for anyone who wanted to show financial support due to all the pandemicrelated restrictions placed on the family.
“At this time, a financial contribution would be accepted and appreciated by the family, should you choose to assist. No parent ever thinks they will have to bury their child, and this is something my friend will have to do,” Omiyale said. “The family is grateful to everyone who has reached out. The GoFundMe campaign was established in order to provide financial support to Kareem’s family with funeral costs and expenses.”
Friends said Wade had a passion for sports and a remarkable ability to connect with people.
Police are appealing to the public for any dash cam or home or business surveillance video from the area of Iroquois Shore Road and Eighth Line between midnight and 3:30 a.m. on May 16.
They are asking anyone with information about the shooting, or the events leading up to it, to contact the homicide tip line at 905-825-4776.
