New clothing ideas for the uncertain autumn that lies ahead

The fashion industry loves fall. The glossy magazines get beefier, shop window displays beckon with their artfully merchandis­ed newness.

It’s partially because that back-to-school, fresh-start, this-time-it-will-be-better feeling stays in our minds long after graduation. But instead of fresh pencils, we’re after boots and denim.

What happens when the only certain thing about fall is yet more uncertaint­y? What will fall fashion, in all its layered, knit glory, look like this year?

We may not have all the answers yet, but we do know this: The weather will get cool and crisp, and we’ll yearn for boots to stomp around in and coats to wrap up in. And because it’s in our human nature to seek novelty, we’ll want to make a few meaningful updates to our wardrobes.
