CLOUD COMPUTING SKILLS ARE IN DEMAND

Humber’s new cloud computing program equips graduates to fill the talent gap

From Netflix and Facebook to WhatsApp and Google Docs, cloud computing is everywhere — and it’s experiencing tremendous growth. With cloud computing skills becoming essential in today’s workplace, Humber College is taking steps to fill the talent gap with a first of its kind in Canada Cloud Computing graduate certificate program.

“COVID-19’s disruptive nature demonstrates how important cloud computing — on-demand service of computing resources such as computing infrastructure and platforms and software that clients can buy, without worrying about purchasing, installing and maintaining associated hardware and software — has become,” says Jonathan Kim, acting program coordinator and Humber’s associate dean, Information and Communication Technology. “We had to stop what we used to do and migrate to virtual environments. The silver lining is industries moved quickly to start the digital transformation, and our program equips graduates to meet the growing demand.”

Launching in January 2021, the entirely online program will focus on the breadth of cloud computing topics, rather than just one aspect. Because the program is geared towards those with various information technology backgrounds, the first semester will provide foundational cloud computing knowledge and skills. Second courses will cover more advanced topics such as cloud solution architecture, cloud

“Humber, as a polytechnic institution, is very good at developing and delivering industry-relevant and career focused programs with project-based learning, such as this certificate,” says Kim.

The program’s case methodology approach will expose students to everyday business challenges as they develop experience in areas such as

“Because the program covers a comprehensive range of cloud computing skills, it will lead to many career paths,” says Kim. “Graduates may become cloud solution architects, cloud security architects, cloud solution consultants, cloud engineers, and more in industries such as banking, manufacturing and government.”
