AL MVP
Jose Abreu, 1B White Sox The veteran led the majors in RBIs (60) and total bases (148) while also topping the American League in hits (76) and slugging percentage (.617). Abreu was the 2014 rookie of the year.
Jose Ramirez, INF Indians Ramirez placed third in MVP voting in 2017 and 2018, and rebounded from a sub-par 2019 with a career-best .993 OPS with 17 home runs and 10 steals in the abbreviated season.
D.J. LeMahieu, 2B Yankees Now one of the top unrestricted free agents on the market, LeMahieu hit a big league-best .364 in 2020 and became the first player in the modern era to win batting titles in both leagues. He was fourth in AL MVP voting last season.
NL CY YOUNG
Trevor Bauer, RH Reds After going 2-5 with an ugly 6.39 ERA in 10 starts late in the 2019 season following a trade from Cleveland, Bauer led the National League with a 1.73 ERA and struck out 100 batters over 73 innings this year. He allowed one earned run or less eight time, and struck out 12 or more on four occasions.
Jacob DeGrom, RH Mets Gunning for his third consecutive NL Cy Young at age 32, the Mets ace led the league with 104 strikeouts and finished with a stellar 2.38 ERA.
Yu Darvish, RH Cubs Darvish went 7-0 with a 0.98 ERA in a stretch of seven starts ending Sept. 4 and his final totals were Cy worthy: 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 12 starts.
NL MVP
Freddie Freeman, 1B Braves Freeman, who has never finished higher than fourth in MVP voting before this year, put up monster numbers after recovering from COVID-19: .341, 13 homers, 23 doubles, 53 RBIs and a 1.102 OPS — the franchise’s highest since Rogers Hornsby in 1928.
Mookie Betts, OF Dodgers Trying to become the second player ever to win MVP in both leagues, joining Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, Betts slashed .292/.366/.562 with 16 homers and 10 steals. He won AL honours in 2018 and was runnerup in 2016.
Manny Machado, 3B Padres Machado socked 16 homers with a slashline of .304/.370/ .580, helping San Diego end a 14-year playoff drought.
