Sleep under the stars in Namibia

Add this desert retreat to your future travel bucket list

- PATRICIA KAROUNOS

If peace and quiet sound like the ultimate luxury to you, move Little Kulala up to the top of your dream destinations list immediately. The retreat is nestled in Namibia’s Namib — the oldest desert in the world and a vast landscape that envelopes the camp.

Newly reopened after an extensive renovation, the escape boasts 11 solar-powered, thatched-roofed suites (starting at $875) that have been designed to seamlessly blend into the surrounding desert. But, not to worry, the suites are each climate-controlled and include a roomy deck with a lavish plunge pool that is perfect for cooling down.

When you’ve spent enough time lounging, hit up the camp’s communal cozy outdoor fire pit where guides are available to discuss the natural habitat of the Namib, and the upstairs lounge that boasts a gallery of photography and local objects to teach visitors about the diverse flora and fauna of the desert. (Tip: Some guides also dabble in astronomy and will be able to point out constellations.) Then, take that knowledge into the field by exploring the expansive region on an electric bike tour, by a hot air balloon ride (complete with a champagne breakfast) and by roaming the desert at night during guided walks that reveal native creatures, like scorpions, that glow under fluorescent light.

Once a day of adventuring is behind you, the real pièce de résistance of Little Kulala is clear: the private rooftop area of each hut — perfect for daytime tapas and happy-hour cocktails — can be transformed into an outdoor bedroom so you can doze off while stargazing under the impressive skies. Sweet dreams.
