Relax in the rainforest in Mexico

Escape under the jungle’s canopy in this luxe treehouse

- PATRICIA KAROUNOS

Spread across 33 hectares of clifftop rainforest above one of the few undeveloped stretches of Mexico’s coastline, the lush One&Only Mandarina eco resort opened late last year in Riviera Nayarit, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. Thankfully, One&Only built the refuge with sustainability in mind, consulting botanists to help preserve the land, which is home to 50 species of ancient trees — including the 235-year-old Grandmother Tree.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the soft echoing of a brass gong, which was crafted by an artisan family who have been casting cathedral bells for more than 60 years. From there, a personal butler whisks you off to a lavish room that’s nearly hidden in the foliage: The lodge is made up of 105 private, standalone treehouses and ocean-facing villas (from $1,250).

Each suite is designed for indoor-outdoor living: interiors are furnished in earthy hues, using indigenous clay, wood, stone and precious metal materials throughout and boast floor-to-ceiling windows and glass walls to frame the natural surroundings, while exteriors feature serene plunge pools and spacious terraces. Finishing touches are added by local makers, including floral vases by Mexico-based blown-glass pioneers Nouvel and custom, handmade textiles by Colorindio, which looks to the stories of ancient Mexican cultures for inspiration. Acclaimed chef Enrique Olvera also tapped Mexican ingredients for his modern takes on ceviche and coconut tamales.

The natural grandeur isn’t confined to the retreat’s villas and open-air restaurants. One&Only partnered with natural skincare brand Tata Harper for the Mandarina’s spa — which sits in a volcanic rock garden — to create an innovative menu designed to engage all five senses with restorative treatments and outdoor yoga.
