What takes a well-designed boutique hotel from good to great? “It’s about the energy,” says Laura Abanil, studio director at Elastic Interiors, an international interior design firm that’s currently working on Canary House, a residential project in the east end of downtown Toronto. There’s an alchemy that transcends functionality and esthetics — and that’s what turns a lobby bar or rooftop patio into a memorable place. Here, Abanil reveals some of her favourite destination hotels that have nailed that ephemeral combination.
The Times Square Edition, New York City
“One of my absolute favourites is Times Square Edition. It’s from Ian Schrager, the cofounder of Studio 54, who’s like a God in the boutique hotel world. It really redefined Times Square because it brought the locals out, and they typically avoid Times Square because it’s so packed with tourists. But this hotel is cool because it’s so transformative: there’s a terrace on the ninth level that’s essentially a garden in the sky, and its perimeter is surrounded by trees. You really feel transported.”
The Broadview Hotel, Toronto
“I love The Broadview Hotel — it’s a local gem that had a historic renovation. Before it (opened), there wasn’t much in the city’s East End that served as a hub for gathering, so the Broadview was a really cool way to redefine this corner. It has a really inclusive vibe: it’s not pretentious and it’s just an easy place to be.”
The Marlton Hotel, New York City
“I’m a big fan of The Marlton Hotel. It’s so cute and it’s really, really cosy. I love it for people watching and hanging out in the lobby and the restaurants. It’s all around a very cool spot.”
Lux Le Morne, Mauritius
“We actually worked on this hotel — it just opened and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.
Lux Le Morne is a really small boutique hotel that’s literally in the middle of paradise; Mauritius is famous for its underwater waterfall. For the hotel, we blended the indoor and outdoor spaces and redefined the uses for different rooms. For example, we introduced a tropical minibar where you can get local fusions and even make your own signature drink.”
