Arsenal keeps it close

-

Arsenal ensured the Premier League title race will go to the last day of the season after returning to the top of the standings with a 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday.

Leandro Trossard’s 20th-minute winner at Old Trafford means the Londoners will take defending champion Manchester City to the final round of games next Sunday.

“Today we wanted to really knock at that door and open that box of dreams and live the last and final day of the season in front of our people with the opportunity to win the Premier League,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

Anything other than a win for Arsenal against United could have seen City clinch the title with victory at Tottenham on Tuesday. Arteta’s team duly delivered and moved one point clear at the top.

Arsenal will host Everton in the final round, when City is at home against West Ham after its game Tuesday.

Manchester City will have to win its remaining two games to be certain of a record fourth straight English title.

Manchester United is eighth in the standings and in danger of missing out on European soccer next season. United has never finished lower than seventh in the Premier League era.

SPANISH LA LIGA

Atletico Madrid moved closer to securing the fourth and final Champions League spot with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.

Rodrigo De Paul scored an 84th-minute winner for Atletico, which opened an eight-point gap to fifth-place Athletic Bilbao with three rounds remaining. Athletic was held at home to a 2-2 draw with Osasuna on Saturday.

It was the third win in a row for Atletico, which is three points behind third-place Barcelona. The Catalan club plays host to seventh-place Real Sociedad on Monday.

ITALIAN SERIE A

Charles De Ketelaere netted twice to help Atalanta boost its chances of returning to the Champions League with a 2-1 win over direct rival Roma.

De Ketelaere scored the two goals within as many minutes in the first half but Lorenzo Pellegrini set up a tense final quarter of the match by scoring from the spot.

Fifth-place Atalanta moved three points above Roma and has also played a match less. The top five in Serie A qualify for next season’s Champions League and there are two rounds remaining in the Italian league.

The result also meant Juventus secured a spot in next season’s Champions League despite surprisingly being held to a 1-1 draw by Salernitana earlier in the day.

The result also confirmed Bologna’s first appearance in the Champions League.

FRENCH LIGUE 1

Kylian Mbappe got a mixed reception from Paris Saint-germain fans in his last home game for the club before scoring in a 3-1 home loss to Toulouse.

Mbappe grabbed his league-leading 27th goal of the season in the eighth minute after sprinting clear and rounding the goalkeeper.

But defensive errors followed as French champion Paris Saint-germain slipped to only its second league defeat of the season, but third straight overall after back-to-back 1-0 losses against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semifinals.

GERMAN BUNDESLIGA

Bayer Leverkusen erased memories of its last defeat almost a year ago by beating Bochum 5-0 away in the Bundesliga to stretch its unbeaten start to the season to 50 games across all competitions.
