Yarmouth County player on provincial 13U team

on the ball field, has had many highlights playing baseball. While still a rookie-age player, he was a member of the mosquito AA team that won the Atlantic championship in 2013. Two years later, at the 2015 peewee A provincials – as a mosquito-age player – he pitched the complete championship game to win the provincial title.

This season, Vincent has remained in his age category to play 13U for the Clark’s Harbour Peewee AA Foggies.

“Vinny has been having a solid season for our Foggies team and is very deserving of making the provincial team,” said his coach, Andrew Holland. “Besides being a strong pitcher and fielder, he has been hitting the ball consistently well. I have no doubt he will represent our team and his community well on and off the field.”

With a batting average of .595 so far this season, Vincent has three homeruns, 25 hits, 28 runs scored and 19 RBIs.

Last spring, he was selected to the core team for the 13U provincial squad but did not make the final roster. Rather than being discouraged, he used it as motivation to improve his game and go back to ID evaluation tryouts stronger this year. Again, coaching staff invited him and 38 baseball players from across Nova Scotia to the core team for a weekend of intersquad games and tryouts in early June.

This year he was selected for the 14-player roster of Team Nova Scotia. He is the only member of the team from the southwest region.

His father, Scott Surette, who coaches Vincent’s older brother Miguel, said, “Vincent showed an interest in baseball at a very young age. He’s enjoyed being at the ball fields since he’s been a baby watching myself and his brother’s teams play. Now he is making a mark of his own in baseball and we are very proud.”

Vincent also competes in club and school sports such as volleyball, badminton, track and softball. He was named this year’s Grade 7 athlete of the year at his school, École secondaire de Par-en-Bas.

The 13U provincial team practises weekly in Dartmouth and will be playing eight exhibition games against Team PEI prior to nationals.
