Shelburne getting ready to welcome tall ships

Five ships to visit Aug. 14 and 15; lots of events planned

- AMY WOOLVETT

The majestic sails of five tall ships will be gracing the shores of Shelburne on Aug. 14 and 15 and while the ships are sure to awe locals and visitors alike, the Town of Shelburne is also looking to showcase all of the gems it has to offer.

The Europa, Spirit of South Carolina, Fair Jeanne, Mist of Avalon and the HMCS Oriole will arrive the morning of Aug. 14 and leave in the early evening on Aug. 15.

“We expect an amazing spectacle for the approach of the ships on the morning of Aug. 14 with many of the smaller Shelburne boats ready to greet the fleet,” said Darren Shupe, manager of community and economic development for the Town of Shelburne.

Opportunities to experience and participate in the maritime history of Shelburne include rowing with the longboats in the harbour, signing up for a kayak tour with Candlebox Kayaking, demonstrations and children’s activities at the Shelburne County Museums.

People will also be able to learn about the area’s deep history of shipbuilding at the Mill building with local historians.

The tall ships won’t be the only spectacle to enjoy during the two- day event. On Aug. 14 Darren Hudson will be wowing audiences with his Wild Axe Lumberjack show.

An outdoor lobster supper will be held at the Guild Hall. Cost is $ 20 a ticket. The venue will also have a variety of musical performances throughout the day.

The magic of the day will continue into the night with a fireworks display on the waterfront.

The ship tours continue on Aug. 15 with the day to be highlighted by a seafood chowder and craft beer tasting event featuring the local favourite Boxing Rock Brewing Company.

History will come alive with an 18th- century re- enactment of the Loyalists and local musical duo Naming the Twins will finish off the celebrations.

“The RDV 2017 Tall Ships Regatta visit to Shelburne provides an opportunity to showcase the best of southwest Nova Scotia to visitors and area residents alike,” said Shupe. “The program of events builds upon the unique experience of visiting these majestic ships to include south shore experiences.”

You can see a full schedule of events on the Town of Shelburne’s website.
