LUMBERJACK FUN

Barrington event a success.

- KATHY JOHNSON

There were fun times to be had, good memories to be shared and stories to be told during the Canada 150 Great Canadian Lumberjack Celebration held in Barrington.

There was a full house on hand for the screening of the National Film Board of Canada’s production, The Last Log Drive, staged in 1983 by Barrington’s Scott family. Director Polly Bennell was on hand to share the experience, as were some of the log drivers.

A tribute to the Beaver Dam Sports Meet was held over two days at the Wild Axe Park, where competitors from back in the day took up the challenge in various water sports and sportsman skills. A junior edition was also held, with an enthusiastic bunch of competitors ready.

The Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs of the Centennial Canoe Pageant, held in 1967 as part of Canada’s 100th birthday celebrations, brought together five members of Team Nova Scotia to share their stories, including Barrington’s own Phil Scott, Richard Gerrior, Gerry Jamieson, Shawn Hadley, all from Guysborough, and Tony Navratil, Bridgetown.

At least three generations of the Scott family helped wrap up the weekend celebrations, staging two lumberjack shows that had the crowd laughing, clapping.

“I think overall everybody had a really good weekend,” said Suzy Atwood, tourism and community development co-ordinator for the Municipality of Barrington. “A lot of people said it was a great weekend and they really enjoyed themselves watching the competitions on and off the river.”

Atwood said she was happy with the turnout throughout the July 28-30 event, saying, “I think it was successful.”
