The ninth annual Phil Callan Memorial Senior High Basketball Classic will see eight teams hit the Shelburne Regional High School gym on Nov. 24 and 25.

The tournament is held each year in memory of Phil Callan, a longtime senior girls basketball coach at Shelburne High, who died of colon cancer in November 2009.

This year, the unique boy/girl tournament will see four boys teams (Shelburne, Hants East, Yarmouth, and Bridgetown) and four girls teams (Shelburne, Yarmouth, West Kings, and Pugwash) take the court.

Games start at noon on Friday, Nov. 24, with the home team Rebels playing the Yarmouth Vikings in girls action, and will continue throughout the day with five more games.

Opening ceremonies will take place at 6 Friday evening, Nov. 24, and a student/player dance will be held at the high school Friday night as well.

Six more games continue Saturday morning starting at 9:30 a.m., with an alumni game set to conclude the tournament at 7 p.m.

Shelburne boys coach Darren Jacklin expects a competitive tournament this year. With a number of returning players, the Shelburne team is in the hunt to win the Provincial D2 tournament. The Shelburne’s girls team, which is coached by John Huskilson, Doug Hartley and Jerry Jacklyn, is looking for a good start to the season, one that will see them hosting D2 Provincials this year the first weekend in March.
