The longtime local triathlete led the way among Olympic-distance competitor­s in the event, which started and finished at the Milo boat club. The Yarmouth Mariners unveiled a new look in the fall of 2017 with gold home jerseys. In October the Mariners had sported another colour jersey – their pink ones during Pink in the Rink that were auctioned off and raised around $9,000 for the Dr. Edwin Janke Cancer Centre at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Former NHL players Ray Bourque and Ron Duguay signed autographs during a visit to Yarmouth Central School in early April. The two were in the area for a game featuring former NHLers, a benefit game supporting two cancer-related charities. It was part of a weekend of hockey held in memory of Gary J. Surette, a Yarmouth County resident who died of cancer in late 2015. Riders were high flying at the spring opener of the Clyde River Motocross Track and Trails. ATV riders ran the muddy course during the fourth annual Joel Hopkins ATV Poker Rally on Oct. 14. The dust was flying in the infield on this play during a game between the Clark’s Harbour Foggies and Hammonds Plains during the peewee AA Baseball Nova Scotia 13U AA Provincial Championsh­ip held over the Aug. 18-20 weekend. Not only did the Foggies win the provincial title, they went on to win the Atlantic title as well.
