Cold turkey

Chilly, windy day for Yarmouth’s Boxing Day running event

- ERIC BOURQUE THEVANGUARD. CA ERIC BOURQUE

In the nearly-decade-long history of Yarmouth’s Boxing Day 5K, or Turkey Run, there have been years when temperatures were on the plus side and, with little wind, the conditions were fairly comfortable. The 2017 race was another story.

There were 100 finishers in the event, with proceeds again going to the Megan Corkum Athletic Fund.

The event’s ninth edition was held on a frigid, blustery morning, but the participants were dressed for the occasion and so, like 2016 – which was cold too but not as windy – there were lots of tuques and scarves, mittens and gloves.

Also like 2016, the first runner to finish was Yarmouth County’s Bryan Hipson, who this time covered the course in 18:46.

Darcy Robbins was next in 19:38, followed by Evan Saulnier, the first under-18 male, in 23:14.

Stuart Deveau ( 23: 36) and Claude Bourgeoise ( 23: 53) rounded out the top five.

Sixth went to Troy Landry ( 24: 02) and seventh to Owen Fitzgerald (24:09), who was first among under-12 males.

Chris Nickerson ( 24: 47) and John Bower (24:49) were eighth and ninth respectively, with Angie Saulnier ( 25: 24) placing tenth to lead all women. Right behind her ( in 25: 31) was Ellie Hiltz, first among under- 18 females.

There were 100 finishers, including Danica Nakpil ( 27: 58), first under- 12 female and 23rd overall; Frank Landry ( 28: 23), first among over- 60 male runners and 28th overall; and Jack- e Goodwin (30:01), first over-60 female finisher and 42nd overall.

Proceeds from the Boxing Day 5K support the Megan Corkum Athletic Fund, which helps athletes who travel to compete.

The race again was followed by a breakfast for event participants and volunteers at the Yarmouth Knights of Columbus hall.
