The Yarmouth Mariners added another home win to their record last Friday by doubling the Valley Wildcats 6- 3.

A game between the two teams scheduled for the following day in the valley was cancelled due to the weather.

This weekend the Mariners host Pictou Friday evening, Jan. 12, at 7: 30 p. m. and are on the road Saturday against Amherst and Sunday versus Summerside.

During the Jan. 5 home game versus Valley, the Mariners came out strong in the first period, scoring three goals in the span of about 5 minutes between the 12: 18 and 17: 21 mark. Scoring were Andrew Martell ( Kyle Bergh), Aaron Maillet ( Duncan McKie, Chris Goreham) and Brandon Young (Bergh) to give the Mariners the 3- 0 lead after one.

The Mariners wasted little time adding to their goal tally with Maillet ( Ben Chipman, Noah McMullin) scoring 25 seconds into the second frame. The Valley Wildcats capitalized on the power play later in the second period, scoring two power play goals – at 6:47 off the stick of Drew Packman ( Mark Kennedy, Makail Parker) and at 10:47 on a goal by Mark Kennedy (Brock McLeod, Parker). It was 4-2 after two periods.

Once again Maillet’s stick struck fast in the third period for the Mariners, scoring 34 seconds into the third period, assisted by Brent Broaders and Matt Smith, to increase Yarmouth’s lead to 5- 2. The Valley’s Tarek Paranica ( Packman) scored the Valley’s third goal to come within 2 again, but the Mariners’ Logan Timmons scored the Mariners final goal with 15 seconds left in the game, assisted by Matt Barron and Brendan Young.

The first and second periods were a relatively low penalty affair. The only penalties given out in the third period all came at the 11: 04 mark with eight handed out – four to each team – that included three roughing calls, four fighting calls ( two of which were 5- minute majors, one to each team), one instigator call and two game misconducts.

In net during the game, Leif Hertz stopped three of 29 shots on net by the Mariners while Cole McLaren stopped 35 of 41 shots. Duncan McKie looks for a scoring opportunity as Valley goalie Cole McLaren extends his glove to block the shot. Mariner Ben Chipman hits the puck away from the Mariners net to help out his goalie Leif Hertz. There was no goal on this play and Duncan McKie moments later got shoved onto the goalie by one of the Valley players.
