Sharing and spreading special moments of laughter, joy, warmth and sometimes tears are part of what makes Guiding a special experience for our youth and the communities in which they are involved.

Recently, members of the 1st Digby Pathfinders & Rangers Unit presented Digby Deputy Mayor Jean Brittain with a Victoria’s Quilt in a very special occasion for all.

The unit members learned about Victoria’s Quilts early in September and served at a fundraising dinner in Digby to raise funds for local groups making Victoria’s Quilts.

Victoria’s Quilts Canada is a nationwide organization of volunteers making quilts for people living with cancer. The organization began distributing quilts in 1999 with 19 quilts given out in that first year. At the quilt presentation, Brittain spoke with the girls about her cancer, her fears and her struggles. She stressed the importance of remaining positive and celebrating each day. She also put strong emphasis on looking after one’s health by paying attention to the signs. Her quilt will be with her during her cancer treatments to keep her warm and cozy.

Following a warm group hug, everyone enjoyed cupcakes and ice cream sundaes provided by Terry, Jean and Arlene Drew while sharing stories about Guiding activities and upcoming events. The girls have since started a Victoria’s Quilt and will be working on it throughout the month of February.
