Parts of the Town of Yarmouth saw an interruption in water service last week as a result of a substantial water leak that proved challenging to pinpoint.

Word of the success of the town crew’s efforts came during last Thursday evening’s Yarmouth town council meeting when Yarmouth Pam Mood received noti- fication that the leak had been repaired. She commended the town’s Public Works employees on fixing the situation.

“It wasn’t an easy find to locate that leak, but they’ve done that,” the mayor said. “That was a hard job well done.”

Both residents and businesses in parts of the north part of town had been impacted by the interruption in water service, and areas also experienced discoloured water and lower pressure. The town told residents that although the water was discoloured it was still safe to use and drink. No boil order was needed, it said.

The water issue had arisen early Wednesday, Feb. 7. A Department of Public Works supervisor reportedly went door-to-door, notifying customers in the area as the town worked to fix the problem.

“We are pumping up the water to build pressure in the tanks,” the town had stated on its Facebook page last Wednesday, as it provided updates to residents and businesses. “Crews going as fast as they can, but you can help by conserving water this morning, allowing pressure to build up.”

While water pressure did later return to normal that day, on Main Street between Vancouver Street and Starrs Road water service was interrupted.

Town crews worked all day but had to halt repair work Wednesday evening due to the weather, which included snow, freezing rain and heavy rain. They resumed their work the following morning, working into the evening.
