Fundraiser for Fidelis House planned in Yarmouth

Annual dinner at Yarmouth Lions Club hall has been moved to April

Again this year, the Yarmouth Lions Club will host a dinner in support of Fidelis House in Kentville, but the difference this time is that the event has been pushed back a month and will take place in April rather than March.

Those who turn out on Sunday, April 15, will be served a full-course meal of roast beef.

By having the event in early spring rather than late winter, organizers hope to ensure they won’t have to worry about snow or ice. Not that they’ve ever had to postpone it anyway, but April will give them better odds of good conditions.

This will be the sixth year for the event, which was started by local resident Bob Rodgerson, a member of the Yarmouth Lions Club with personal reasons for wanting to support Fidelis House, having seen for himself the value of the service it provides.

Fidelis House is described as a “home away from home,” a place to stay for people with loved ones in the Valley Regional Hospital. It also provides accommodation for those getting outpatient treatment there.

Over the years, the Yarmouth dinner has raised more than $25,000 for the cause.

With regard to the new date for the dinner, Rodgerson acknowledges that while they never had to postpone the event when it was held in March, he recalls one year in particular when it wasn’t looking good.

“We almost lost it ... but it did clear up in the afternoon and it saved us,” he said. “Last year it was iffy, but it was good, we got by.”

The dinner is scheduled to start at 5 p. m. and, aside from the meal, there will be door prizes.

Rodgerson is the chef but the event is a team effort involving fellow Lions Club members and their spouses, as well as Lionettes.

Tickets for the dinner are $15 and are available from Lions Club members. They also will be on sale March 30 and 31 at the Yarmouth Mall and April 6 and 7 at Walmart (from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. all four days).
