Rebels take regional title, move on to provincials

The Shelburne Regional High School boys basketball team – recently crowned Division 2 champions of Nova Scotia’s western region – will be off to Windsor, where King’s-Edgehill is the host school for the NSSAF Division 2 provincial championships to be held March 1-3.

The Rebels will be one of eight teams vying for the provincial banner.

As of last week, their seeding for the provincial tournament and who they would play first had yet to be finalized.

The Shelburne boys advanced to the provincials thanks to their performance at the western regionals – held Feb. 16-17 at Northeast Education Centre in Canning – where the Rebels went 3-0, including a 92-71 title-game victory over King’s-Edgehill.

Shelburne opened the tournament by defeating Bridgetown 104-73 and, in their second game, the Rebels downed West Kings 113-67.

Shelburne came out of the regionals with an overall season record of 24 wins and nine losses, including a 16-0 mark against teams in the western region.

Here is a recap of the Rebels’ games in the western regional championships:

Shelburne 104 – Bridgetown 73

Daniel Slack had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Rebels in their opening game of the regional tournament and teammate Tyson Hartley had 22 points.

Shelburne 113 – West Kings 67

Tyson Hartley led the Rebels in the team’s second game with 37 points and teammate Daniel Slack had 29 points and 10 rebounds.

Shelburne 92 – King’s-Edgehill 71

Slack had 30 points and eight rebounds for Shelburne in the regional title game, which was a four-point contest at halftime, with the Rebels pulling away in the second half.

Oliver Harding had a big game for Shelburne, scoring 24 points – including six three-pointers – and Hartley had 23 points.
