One last night with the frogs

- David Townsend

I was listening to a Bible study a while ago that brought my attention to a very small yet profound item in Exodus chapter 8.

It was actually one word, and though I’ve read the word many times, I had not before noticed the significance of it being there.

The word was simply: tomorrow.

The children of Israel were imprisoned in Egypt, and a series of plagues would come upon them until the pharaoh would allow them to leave.

There were 10 plagues in total, and many theologians believe these plagues each showed God’s authority over certain Egyptian gods.

The first plague was the water turning to blood, and the second plague, the one we read of in Exodus 8, was the plague of frogs.

The Egyptians worshipped a frog- headed goddess, but this many frogs were ridiculous!

Moses told Pharaoh if he al- lowed the children of Israel to go, that God would stop the plague. Pharaoh agreed.

He often agreed to do something at first in order to get what he wanted, and then later changed his mind.

Moses asked Pharaoh when he would like him to pray to have the plague stopped.

This is when Pharaoh made his humourous reply: tomorrow! Tomorrow? Shouldn’t he have responded, right now?

Today?

Yesterday if not before? But no, he said, wait until to- morrow.

We don’t know why Pharaoh said this, but it is usually our answer as well. Maybe its just human nature. We will deal with our sin, tomorrow. We’ll start giving up on our addictions tomorrow.

We will be nicer to our spouse and family tomorrow. We will get closer to God tomorrow.

Always tomorrow, never today.

We always want to spend one more night with the frogs, and it’s just as silly as when Pharaoh did the same.

Let’s not wait until tomorrow to change our lives or our circumstances, to love our neighbour or deal with our sin.

Let’s not wait any longer to do what we know in our heart we should do.

Work while it is yet day, as the scriptures tell us.

Tomorrow is never promised. Are these things that damage our lives really worth holding on to?

Is it really worth it to spend even one more last night with the frogs of our own existence?

I don’t think so. Have a great day everybody.

May God bless you all.
