The Barrington Barons didn’t get the chance to go for the title at the Valley High School Hockey League’s league championship on Feb. 27.

The high school hockey team played a match against West Kings Wolverines and almost avoided defeat after mounting a comeback in the third period, scoring to bring the score to 5-4 with seconds left in the final period.

The Barons pulled their goalie to give them six players on the ice, however despite several chances they couldn’t tie the game.

The team’s coach, Billy Symonds, felt good about the ef- fort his team put into the game.

“It was a good game of hockey. Those are the games we like; nice clean games, close the whole way. There were two to three penalties the whole time,” he said.

The team also counted five players in their lines who hadn’t played all year, who stepped up to join the team for the tournament.

“These kids stepped up, and that’s what high school sports are all about. We’ve got the whole school behind us, and these are the days you really love being a coach,” said Symonds.

Team player Jude Greenwood said he felt the team’s first string and newer players put up a solid effort, despite spending little time playing together prior to the match up.

“I think we played pretty good, had some players that were out, and I think we did good with what we had,” he said.

“We scored a goal late and just didn’t have enough time to come back and get one more. We were hoping to get it on the power play, but it didn’t happen.”
