Maple Grove girls finish fourth in regionals

Panthers lose to valley schools in western regional championsh­ips

Maple Grove Education Centre’s junior girls basketball team, which placed fourth at the western regionals held last week in New Minas, was scheduled to play host to the district cham- pionships for Yarmouth and Shelburne counties Tuesday, March 6.

At the western regionals, which were held in the valley Feb. 27, the Panthers fell in the semifinal round to a strong Evangeline Middle School – the host school for the regional tournament – by a score of 53-22.

Zoe Schwan was Maple Grove’s leading scorer with seven points and teammate Ellie Hiltz had four.

In the bronze- medal game, Maple Grove was defeated by another strong team, Kings County Academy, 58-40.

Leading scorers for Maple Grove in this one were Ellie Hiltz with 16 points and Zoe Schwan with 11.

Hebbville defeated Evangeline Middle School in the title game.

Meanwhile, four teams were slated to take part in the Yarmouth/Shelburne district championsh­ip tournament hosted by Maple Grove on March 6. This was a combined tier 1 and 2 event.

Maple Grove was ranked first and would play Barrington in the tournament opener, followed by second-ranked Lockeport playing third-ranked Shelburne.

There was a charitable component to the game too, as the plan was to accept items for the food bank.
