Shelburne Rebels go 1-2 at provincial­s

The Carrefour Leopards downed the Hants East Tigers 8653 to win the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation (NSSAF) Division II Senior Girls Provincial Championsh­ips at the Shelburne Regional High School on March 3.

The eight-team, single eliminatio­n tournament hosted by the Shelburne Rebels got underway on March 1. East Hants, who were seeded number one going into the tourney, took out the eighth seed Rebels 78-46 and the fourth seed Amherst Vikings 60- Shelburne Rebels guard Mackenzie Smith goes for a shot in the team’s opener against East Hants in the NSSAF Division II Senior Girls Provincial Championsh­ips at the Shelburne Regional High School on March 1. Seeded number two, the Carrefour Leopards defeated Central Kings Gators (#7) 70-30 and West Kings Wolverines (#3) 76-67 to procced to the championsh­ip tilt.

The hometown Rebels posted a 1-2 tourney record. After losing the opener, the Rebels came back with an 82-81 win over number five seed Breton Education Centre. With eight seconds left on the clock, Rebels’ grad Rebecca Deinstadt got the rebound from a missed foul shot and dribbled the length of the floor for a game winning layup for an eight-goal game performanc­e. Also leading the Rebels were Mackenzie Smith with 52 points and Alexa Jacklyn 16. The Rebels met the Millwood Knights for fifth and sixth place seed in their final contest, losing 70-44. Top shooters for Shelburne were Mackenzie Smith with 19 and Bella Hagel with 6. Smith also led the Rebels in the opener with 29 points.

In bronze medal action, the Amherst Vikings edged the West Kings Wolverines 64-63.
