International Women’s Day being celebrated at Black Loyalist Heritage Center
The International Women’s Day event planned for the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre on Thursday, March 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. will be a celebration of “the strength and resilience of women” from across Shelburne County.
Cindy Embree will be guest speaker for the event. A retired teacher and community worker, Embree has lived in East Sable River since 2001 with her husband Sherm, on property once owned by her grandparents. Cindy Embree will be the guest speaker at the International Women’s Day event at the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre on March 8. Embree has been an integral part of the group, Shelburne County Women’s Fishnet, helping to mentor women re-entering the workforce; supporting scholarship programs through Fishnet; helping to start Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women and Song, and serving on the Board for Community Business Development and the Roseway Hospital Foundation. She currently volunteers as a board member for Sou’West Nova Transit.
All five municipal units in the county have been requested to nominate a woman from their area who they feel embodies some or all of the many attributes that women play in society, such as leaders in the community in- spiring trust and friendship, contributing to the economic success of the area in their roles across their professions and work, as well as being the building block to family life.
“We will be celebrating those women and all women in Shelburne County,” said Penny Smith co-chairwoman of the Shelburne County International Women’s Day Committee. “We want to try to make it an interactive afternoon as well by hosting questions on the wall for the ladies to answer, like how do we press for progress in Shelburne County and what should we as a county be celebrating? Different questions that would hopefully get the ladies thinking of ways to continue to be part of something as great as this and to help us find ways to continue to progress in the community.”
Press for Progress is this year’s International Women’s Day theme, which is a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, and a call for action for gender parity.
All are welcome to attend the Shelburne County International Women’s Day event at the Black Loyalist Heritage Center. There is no admission cost and refreshments will be served. The event is being sponsored by the TriCounty Women’s Center.
