Relay participant sees event as chance to give back to community
Digby Relay for Life teams prepare for upcoming fundraisers
Jordan Morgan is participating in the Digby Relay for Life this year along with the 16 other teams already registered.
“It’s something I can do to give back to the community that’s given so much to me.”
The Digby dad has been battling an undifferentiated cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, for four years.
With all the support he’s received in his battle through numerous fundraisers and donations he’s happy to see so many teams participating in the Relay for Life this year.
“It doesn’t surprise me. Digby is a very giving community.”
He volunteered at a relay two years ago, but this is his first time actually participating.
Relay for Life is a way to celebrate the strength of those battling cancer and cancer survivors.
“They’re the reason why we celebrate,” said Niki Lewis, the southwest district co-ordinator of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Proceeds of Relay for Life go towards cancer research, Camp Good Time and the Lodge That Gives.
“We have survivors because we fundraise through events like Relay for Life,” Lewis said. The Digby relay is scheduled for June 16.
Upcoming Fundraisers
Digby Relay for Life teams are getting ready for the annual yard sale fundraiser called Junk in the Trunk.
With so many teams registered for the relay, there should be more junk in the trunk than ever.
Relay participants are hosting the yard sale-like event at the Digby Curling Club on May 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participants will be selling a variety of goods from household items to clothes. There will be a barbecue and teams should have raffle tickets available for some of the many individual team fundraisers.
“There will be everything from A to Z. It’s a one-stop shop,” said the chairman of Digby Relay for Life, Terry Corcoran.
The event is rain or shine. Teams will be outside if it’s good weather but inside if it’s not.
“This gives us an opportunity to host a community event and raise awareness of the relay at the same time,” Corcoran said.
Teams are organizing their own fundraisers, but this event is giving them an easy way to fundraise alongside other teams, he said.
“All they have to do is bring the stuff.”
On May 5 at 7 p. m., Team Brent is hosting their annual dessert social and silent auction at the Hillgrove Christian Centre.
Jordan Morgan will also be at the Oakdene Centre on May 5 selling his handmade products from Isle of Bees Apiary. Jordan Morgan, pictured with his family, is participating in Relay for Life in Digby this year.
